Beginnings
Msgr. Arthur J. Lieux was born in Baton Rouge on September 11, 1914. He attended public school for two years and then transferred to St. Vincent’s Academy (now Catholic High School in Baton Rouge). He entered the Seminary of St. Benedict near Covington and completed his studies at Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans.
Early Ministry
He was ordained by Archbishop Rummel on March 23, 1939 and he served as Military Service Chaplain for German POW’s from 1944-1948. Bishop Tracy appointed him as the first Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the diocese of Baton Rouge.
Patriotic Degree
He was a priest for 41 years and at the time of his death and he was the Faithful Friar of Archbishop Blenk Assembly. He was a very active member of the 4th Degree of the Knights of Columbus. Fr. Lieux was outspoken in his support of the principles of the Order and he was known for his informative and eloquent talks on national and local issues at Assembly meetings and functions. Msgr. Lieux died on August 19, 1980.
